“Think what a better world it would be if we all, the whole world,
had cookies and milk about three o’clock every
afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap.”
Robert Fulghum
If you know me, I have a love/hate relationship with food like this. I love it because it's so good! And I 'hate' it when I see the quantities of certain ingredients that go into making such yummy treats :o) But all in moderation, right?
Last week I decided to make some real cookies...the chewy chocolatey kind. A few years ago I had been helping a friend make some. She, an American, had the recipe in her head from making them so many times. So I, loving to note down new recipes, asked her how to make them. And the other day, finally, I got around to doing it...and wow, delicious! In fact they tasted almost exactly like the Cookie Time cookies that I really like over in New Zealand.
Tollhouse Chocolate Cookies
2 1/4 cups of flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup butter softened (225g)
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla (apparently 3 tsp is even better, as I noted down!)
2 large eggs
2 cups of chocolate bits
1 cup of nuts (I didn't add any nuts)
:: Heat the oven to 180 degrees C.
:: Mix the flour, baking soda and salt in a bowl.
:: Beat the butter, sugars and vanilla in a larger bowl until creamy.
:: Add the eggs into the butter/sugar mix, beating well after each addition.
:: Gradually beat the flour mixture in (adding a tablespoon of milk at this stage).
:: Stir in the chocolate and nuts.
:: Drop balls onto ungreased trays and bake in the oven for approx 10 minutes.
The recipe makes quite a large amount of cookies. I found myself stuck with a dilemma afterwards...not wanting to fill the girls with sugar, and Eti found them too 'sweet' (though this is coming from a Frenchman...and the French tend to make their desserts rich rather than too sweet!)...so, over the following days I found myself continuously encouraging Eti to eat some so that I wouldn't eat 90% of them by myself...which I might just have done!
And they taste wonderful accompanied with a glass of cold milk :o)
Bon Appetit!

Oh yum, I love Cookie Time cookies also:) Might have to have a go at making these.
I am going to bake it sometime this week. :) Thanks for the recipe. I am sure they will freeze well too.
What a wonderful dilemma! They look amazing and should taste really good, if the amount of butter is anything to go by, haha! I have an unhealthy love affair with butter....
And a comment for Rita, yes they will freeze well based on the butter quantity!
I know what you mean, Sammy :o) The butter/sugar content often puts me off making cookies, but...I caved and enjoyed them :o)
